milwaukee weekend hip haps.

Welcome to the weekend ya’ll, it’s time to loosen your laces!

Have you ever heard of The Hood Internet? What? REALLY? Well bookmark their site because it’s awesome, and let me tell you what’s good. They’re a group made of two mash up kings from the windy city known for remixing two jams that really aren’t supposed to even be played in the same room, EVER… but ends up sounding really good. Their mixtapes are super fun and familiar with just the right touch treatments for those suffering with ADHD. . I’ve been waiting for these guys to come into town, catch em’ tonight at The Todd Wehr Conference Center on MSOE’s campus. Opening up will be locals The Glamour and DJ Dion. Woot!

Fore! Mac Lethal live at Mad Planet 4/8/10

The Kansas City based, far from commercial, hungry man emcee, Mac Lethal has a show tomorrow night at Mad Planet. Dude keeps things REAL different and REAL independent. His pipdream consists of stirring controversy about hipsters and celebs instead of dating the hottest R&B singer in the game. He’s placed in rap battles at Scribblejam, debuted an album under Rhymesayers, rocked his own radio show, and much much more to make his Mama proud. When he was asked to describe his live show, he said “My live show is like getting hit in the head with a golf club.” No worries, just bring a face mask.

Mac Lethal is like Brad Pitt in a way, he’s always munchin’ on something.

team rider #420.

Today is opening day, some may call it the last day of shred season. We’re sad to have it come to an end but we’re super stoked for skatin’ and tailgatin’! Let’s finish up the season proper, shall we?

If you weren’t at Picnic In The Park then you don’t know that Paul and I entered, buttered, and murdered the competition! I dug up a sequence shot of Paul butt sliding the battleship box to end your season with some humor. Enjoy.

milwaukee weekend hip haps.

I’m back with a weekend stacked with shows, shows, and more shows, pay close attention.

Bassnectar is a dirty booty droppin’ DJ from San Fransico and tonight he’s playing at Turner Hall. I’ve seen this dude a few times and each time it’s a crazy dance party with dread locks and glowsticks flying everywhere! I remember the first show he played in Milwaukee was a few years ago at The Social, now known as Stack’d Burger Bar, the place was empty. Tonight he’s playing a sold out show in one of Milwaukee’s biggest venues–huge! Milwaukee is a tough crowd to please so kudos to him. If you didn’t get your tickets early, I’m sorry. You can make yourself feel better by downloading some free mixtapes from his site!

Also, tonight and all weekend long is a fundraiser for one of the hottest topics in Wisconsin as of late. I won’t go into the details except that it’s at The Miramar Theatre and your $10 donation for the show goes to the Milwaukee Chapter of NORML & IMMLY. Madison’s Weapons of Mass DeFunktion, SLM, and Recalcitrant will be performing in support.

Passion Pit is a band with pop and electro hooks that truly helps the medicine go down. Tomorrow night they’re playing The Riverside Theatre; after they sold out Turner Hall shortly after tickets went on sale. My gut instinct is telling me that the show will sell out for a second time so scoop your tickets quick. Thanks to our latest shop dude, Nick Green, we have been jammin’ and slangin’ tee’s to their latest album Manners. We miss ya man!

Ok, flippin’ genres. if you’re more into dreamy indie rather than electro, Beach House is also playing tomorrow night at The Pabst Theatre. They recently locked themselves in their studio with turntables, drums, vintage keyboards and a bottle of vodka. Then they came out with a killer record and signed to a new label. This Baltimore based duo is blowin’ up and is a lovey dovey, smoochin’ at the show kinda band. Oh, did I mention this show is only 10 bucks?

Soccer players are dreamy, but I don’t really follow the sport. Besides that, I did find out today that The Milwaukee Wave is playing in the MISL (Major Indoor Soccor League Championships) this Sunday at 5PM! The Wave coach, Keith Tozer, scoops his Christmas presents at MODA3.  Support local fútbol!

Get up and see you out, enjoy the weather!

milwaukee weekend hip haps.

I’m back with your weekend line-up of sweaty dance parties, pub crawls, and skate contests. Read on!

Tonight is the monthly installment of Rubbin’ N Bumpin’. This 18+ dance party at The Miramar Theatre brings in local and national talent. Featured tonight is the historic Madison Discotech dance party creator and oh so glitchy OCD AUTOMATIC, out of Chicago. Additional performances by The Glamour and DoubleDrop, both reppin’ brew city.

Also tonight playing at the historic Turner Hall is Black Rebel Motorcyle Club. This band is one of the most recent additions to my iPod and I’m super excited that they’re in town. I got hooked on their latest Beat The Devil’s Tattoo.

round 2: miltown beatdown 2010

It’s that time again, time for round 2 of the Miltown Beatdowns! This Friday at The Wherehouse, 4 more Milwaukee producers will be battling for a spot in the finals along with round 1 winner, Lex Luther.  This event is super creative, innovative, and all around entertaining. The new format for the battle is a suspense builder and the guest performers are all show-stoppers.

what’s my name…

I had the privilege of attending the Jay-Z BP3 concert on Friday at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Hands down the best show I have seen in the last 10 years!

Rising from the stage against a row of cityscape like projection screens Jay opened with “Run This Town”.

British electro-pop duo, The Big Pink is playing Turner Hall tonight. Lately I’ve been rockin’ their latest album A Brief History of Love with the jam Dominos on repeat. The loudest band out of NYC, A Place to Bury Strangers is opening up. For only $10, this show slaps the recession in the face!

Every year the US Bank gives up their 97 flight stairwell accent to the Fight for Air climbers. You have from 8AM-9AM on Saturday to complete this 1,034 step vertical road race as many times as possible. Last year the record was 5. That’s just bananas. All funds raised go to the American Lung Association.

When I was a freshman at UWM, Atmosphere was having a album release signing at Atomic Records(R.I.P.). I cruised over and got my You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having album signed as well as my form of transportation at the time, rollerskates. I was hitting some sweet jumps outside the record store when P.O.S. came up to me and asked if he could sign my skates too. I felt dumb for not recognizing him and honored that a kick ass rapper dude wanted to sign my skates. “POS rolls like this” is permanently marked on the inside my right front wheel. Representing RhymesayersDoomtree and Midwest hip hop,  P.O.S is playing a show with a Dessa and Astronautalis Saturday night at Turner Hall. Don’t miss out!

One of the wildests acts touring the states right now is the Golden Dragon Chinese Acrobats. I can’t  even begin to describe my excitment about this being at The Pabst Theatre Saturday night. Bridging the culture gap between China and Western nations, these acrobats take balance and motor coordination to a whole new level. This performance will blow your mind.

To get a touring tribute show 38 years after your death you must have been a big deal, right? One of the biggest influences on rock music, Jimi Hendrix is forever missed but lives through shows like Experience Hendrix going down Sunday night at The Riverside Theatre. “OOOOO Foxey Lady!!”

Oh, I forgot to mention that March Madness is taking over Milwaukee too.  Have a great weekend ya’ll!

Miltown Beatdown 2010 Round 1 photos.

The first round of the Miltown Beatdown went down on Friday March 5th at The Wherehouse. The turnout was huge, much larger than would’ve fit into last year’s venue, Jackalope Lounj. Peep the pics below.
